The Life That Came After: Piper’s Story

 

When an animal leaves SPCA Tampa Bay with a new family, we get to celebrate the beginning.

What we don’t always get to see is everything that comes after.

The ordinary days. The big adventures. The moves and milestones. The families that grow and change. The years of companionship that begin after an animal walks out our doors.

Recently, the Garrison family gave us the incredible gift of seeing that part of the story.

In 2013, they came to SPCA Tampa Bay and adopted a young dog named Bandit. They renamed her Piper, and over the next 12 years, she became part of nearly every chapter of their lives.

As a military family, the Garrisons moved across the country, and Piper went with them. She lived in Florida, Washington, North Carolina and Texas.

She hiked mountains, explored the outdoors and swam along the coasts.

She shared her adventures with her dog brother, Ruger, and was there as the family welcomed two sons.

She wasn’t simply along for the journey. Piper was family.

And on two occasions, she was also a protector.

Her family shared that Piper once came to Kate’s aid during a dog attack. Years later, while Kate was pregnant, Piper alerted her that something was wrong before Kate herself knew she was experiencing a medical emergency.

Through adventures and quiet days at home, new places and a growing family, Piper stayed by their side.

This summer, at 15 years old, Piper crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

In the midst of missing her, Kate reached out to SPCA Tampa Bay to tell us where life had taken the dog they adopted so many years ago.

She explained that her husband, who serves in the Coast Guard, often wonders what happens to the people he helps rescue after their paths separate. It made her think about animal shelters and the pets who leave our care.

She wanted us to know what happened to Piper.

She wanted us to know that hers was a good story.

For those of us who get to know and love animals during their time at the shelter, that is an extraordinary gift.

We may know an animal for days, weeks or months. We learn their personality, celebrate their progress and hope for the moment when someone chooses them. Then one day, they leave with their new family, and an entirely new life begins beyond our doors.

We don’t always get to know the rest.

This time, we did.

Piper traveled thousands of miles. She climbed mountains, swam along the coasts and explored new places. She became a sister, a protector and a constant companion. She watched a family grow and was deeply loved through every season of her life.

Twelve years after her adoption, her story found its way back to where it began.

To the Garrison family, thank you for coming back to tell us the rest of Piper’s story. Thank you for sharing the photos, adventures and memories that filled all those years after she left our care.

Most of all, thank you for giving Piper 12 wonderful years in which she was never just a dog who had once been adopted from a shelter.
