Shelter Veterinarian

Full-Time Position

Job Description: Be a medical provider for SPCA Tampa Bay Veterinary Services.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Support all veterinary services including: emergency care, medical care and treatment, infectious disease prevention and control, necropsy and disposition of animals, volunteer foster care, employee pet care, and veterinarian externship and internships.
  • Perform and direct euthanasia, in accordance with AVMA and ASV standards.
  • Perform high volume, high quality spay and neuter surgeries.
  • Perform other soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries as resources and training permit.
  • Support efforts, as needed, by evaluating and providing documentation of the medical condition (including necropsies) of all animals involved in cruelty and neglect investigations.
  • Mentor veterinary students in the externship program and veterinarians completing a shelter internship.
  • Oversee record keeping of controlled drugs and supplies.
  • Oversee ordering and inventory of medications and medical supplies.
  • Act as spokesperson for animal cases, media opportunities and medical education or provide expert witness testimony as needed.
  • Provide animal stories for SPCA media staff.
  • Establish, monitor and update as necessary the standards and protocols of animal care, handling and sanitation.
  • Assist in the recruitment, selection, supervision, evaluation and training of direct reports.
  • Provide direction and assist in the recruitment, selection and evaluation of other department staff.
  • Participate in the collection of, and evaluate pertinent data, for monthly/annual dashboard data and trend reports for either the shelter, or spay/neuter clinic
  • Serve as a member of the leadership team.
  • Provide friendly, responsive and personalized customer service.
  • Keep, and ensure department staff maintain, accurate and updated records in appropriate medical record software.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Participate in required meetings and trainings, special events and fund raising functions.
  • Professionally represent SPCA Tampa Bay at all times.

Experience:

  • Three to four years working in a veterinary hospital as a supervisor or manager
  • Shelter experience preferred

Nonessential Functions:

Qualifications: Education:

  • VMD or DVM
  • Continuous education to maintain current knowledge of legislation and regulations.

Licensure or Certification:

  • Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
  • DEA distribution license
  • State of Florida Business License – Veterinarian
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with acceptable driving record

Animal Care Attendant

Full-Time Position

Job Purpose:
Provide care for animals and clean and maintain janitorial needs.

Essential Functions:

  • Complete items designated on quality care checklist each shift.
  • Care for animals by feeding, watering, and maintaining clean and sanitary conditions according to assigned daily work schedule.
  • Maintain cleanliness of bathrooms and laundry as stated in standard operating procedures.
  • Maintain cleanliness of assigned kennel as stated in standard operating procedures.

  • Observe animals for possible problems and report problems to the medical department.

  • Six months animal handling experience preferred.

Lead Client Care Specialist

Job Purpose:
Supervise the Client Care Specialist (CCS) Team in the provision of friendly and responsive customer service. Design and implement protocols and practices that directly improve the flow of scheduling of appointments and provision of timely service.  Deal directly with all customer related issues and concerns.  Work with the Hospital Manager in planning and executing regular performance evaluations and any necessary discipline or redirection of CCS staff.  Be the subject matter expert concerning services, practices and the appropriate level of communication with clients.

Nurse

Full-Time Position

Job Purpose:
Provide medical care to client pets under the direction of the St Pete Veterinary Center Veterinarians’ instructions and standard business and medical operating procedures.  Serve in one or more assigned nurse roles on designated shift as personal certifications allow.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist Veterinarians with treatment procedures and exams.
  • Complete initial exam work-up, and start the exam process for the veterinarian, including the gathering of pertinent medical and environmental information, based on Veterinary SOP.
  • Perform routine procedures including, micro chipping, vaccinations, wound cleaning, injections and blood sampling.
  • Perform and interpret routine laboratory procedures including skin scrapes, DTMs, ear cytology and microfilaria exams.
  • Complete daily, or as otherwise scheduled:
    1. Perform treatments of hospitalized patients, including post-operative medications, and other necessary medical tasks.

All Nurses

  • Provide friendly, responsive and personalized customer service.
  • Keep accurate and updated records and enter data as required into AVIMark software.
  • Assist other medical team employees as needed.
  • Be able to interact with the public and discuss medical issues with clients.

Animal Welfare Associate

Job Description:

Provide care for animals, maintain cleanliness of kennels and support the adoption process.

Intake and Investigations Assistant

Single Full-Time Position

Job Purpose: Facilitate the transport and intake processes for shelter animals, strays, owner surrenders, transfers and owner-requested euthanasia.

Essential Functions:

  • Drive ambulance to retrieve sick or injured animals.
  • Transport shelter animals to and from appointments.
  • Maintain radio contact with supervisor and admissions during pick up process.
  • Maintain vehicle and equipment in good mechanical, sanitary and safe conditions.
  • Prepare reports and receipts per standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Clean cages, kennels and offices as schedule requires.
  • Appear and testify in court as necessary.
  • Prepare reports for the State Attorney’s Office with regard to animal cruelty cases.
  • Provide friendly, responsive and personalized customer service.
  • Keep accurate and updated records and enter data as required into appropriate shelter software.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Participate in required meetings and trainings.
  • Professionally represent SPCA Tampa Bay at all times.

Qualifications:
Education:
2 years of college and a minimum of 5 years of driving experience.

Licensure or Certification:
Valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record.

Experience:

  • Three years of animal handling experience.  Prior work experience to that demonstrates the ability to set priorities and work with minimal supervision.

Demonstrated Competencies:

  • Ability to exercise critical thinking in making judgments.
  • Ability to follow directions.
  • Ability to operate animal control equipment.

Nurse

Single Part-Time Position

Job Purpose: Provide medical care to SPCA animals as per Shelter Veterinarian instructions and medical standard operating procedures. 

Essential Functions:

  • Assist Shelter Veterinarian with treatment procedures and exams.
  • Complete initial physical exam, and start an animal on medications or treatments, based on Veterinary SOP.
  • Perform routine procedures including, micro chipping, vaccinations, wound cleaning, injections and blood sampling.
  • Perform and interpret routine laboratory procedures including skin scrapes, DTMs, ear cytology and microfilaria exams.
  •  Perform treatments, vaccinate, deworm and/or give heartworm/flea prevention for all animals in the shelter.
  • Complete any treatments in for Adoptions floor animals, including post-operative medications, and monthly preventives.
  • Check volunteer medical concerns sheets in Feline Friends, the Canine Volunteer office, and Pocket Pet Plaza.
  • Examine all the animals in adoptions and move any animals of concern (medical or behavioral) to the proper kennel, starting treatment recommended by the Medical SOP.
  • Provide friendly, responsive and personalized customer service.
  • Keep accurate and updated records and enter data as required into Pet Point shelter software.
  • Assist other medical team employees as needed.
  • Be able to interact with the public and discuss medical issues with adopters.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
  • Participate in required meetings and trainings.
  • Ensure DEA compliance with Controlled Substances
  • Professionally represent SPCA Tampa Bay at all times.
