Taking care of our mental health is as crucial as maintaining physical fitness. Just as we exercise our bodies to enhance physical strength and endurance, engaging in a mental health workout is essential for nurturing our emotional well-being. I do not waver on my routine because of the profound impact this structured regimen has on my overall quality of life.
As a sober woman of almost 30 years who struggled terribly with depression as a young adult, I thrive with discipline and a routine. After 7-8 hours of sleep, the day begins at 5:30 am with exercise to trigger my endorphins and awaken those natural mood lifters. I then transition to a guided meditation session using the Insight Timer App to center my thoughts and enhance my emotional health.
One of the most cherished parts of my mental health workout involves my faithful companion, Charlie Brown, our chocolate lab. After meditation, my husband and I take Charlie Brown for a morning walk in nature. This is not just a physical activity but also a significant emotional and psychological enhancer. The phone also remains on ‘Do Not Disturb’ until the mental health workout comes to a conclusion.
The Therapeutic Power of Pets
The benefits of pet ownership on mental health are well documented. Animals can offer companionship, reduce stress and anxiety, and even help mitigate symptoms of depression. For me, time spent with Charlie Brown is filled with unspoken joy and comfort. His presence is calming, and his eagerness to explore the simplicity of nature reminds me to appreciate the present moment, a fundamental aspect of mental wellness.
Dogs, especially, are attuned to human emotions and can provide comfort during times of emotional distress. Charlie Brown’s reactions to my mood help me become more aware of my own emotional state, promoting a deeper understanding of myself and how I interact with the world around me. This reflective practice is crucial for my mental health workout as it encourages continuous personal growth and emotional regulation.

Incorporating nature into my daily routine amplifies the benefits of my morning activities. The serenity and beauty of natural landscapes have a proven effect on reducing feelings of stress and promoting a sense of peace.
